Exoplanets and Life Beyond Earth

The Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) Program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science invites you to join us:

as we explore new findings in the search for planets and life beyond Earth. No longer science fiction, new extrasolar planets are being discovered at an incredible rate, some potentially habitable. Astrobiologist Stephen Freeland will describe how the burgeoning field of astrobiology is revealing the robust and tenacious nature of life even in extreme conditions on Earth and whether we can expect life elsewhere to be common. Historian Steven Dick will respond with insights on the implications of these new findings for our understanding of the significance of life in the universe.

MiniSipper: A New Concept for High-capacity, Long-duration, Automated In Situ Water Sampling

Presenter: Thomas Chapin of the USGS Denver office

Most environmental water quality monitoring studies rely on hand-collected “grab” samples for water sample collection. However, grab sampling is expensive with significant costs for personnel, equipment, vehicles and travel. Field costs can be especially high if the sampling site is remote, dangerous to access, or snowbound for many months of the year. Grab sampling typically provides a few samples per year and this low temporal resolution sampling rarely captures the details of major transient hydrologic processes such as storm, flood, or seasonal runoff events. Currently available automated samplers could provide water sampling at remote sites, but these samplers are typically large, heavy, collect 24 one liter samples, and are not well suited for operation in freezing conditions.

The USGS has developed a small, light, low-cost, high-capacity, in situ water sampler, the MiniSipper, to overcome the limitations of current automated water samplers. The MiniSipper injects 2 to 10 mL discrete or integrated water samples into a 500’ Telfon sample coil. Nitric acid is added to stabilize each sample and individual water samples are then separated with a gas bubble. Over 250 five mL water samples can be collected with <5% carryover. The MiniSipper collects samples in situ for up to 12 months unattended and even operates under ice for over-winter sampling. After recovery, samples are pumped out of the sample coil and analyzed by high sensitivity multi-element methods such as ICP-MS.

The MiniSipper provides long-duration high-resolution metal data for hydrologic and geochemical processes that are almost impossible to observe with currently available sampling methods. MiniSipper technology is very flexible and MiniSippers has been used for acid mine drainage studies (above and below ground), tracer studies (above and below ground) and for post-wildfire runoff studies. The Borehole MiniSipper is designed for well monitoring, fits down a 2” borehole, and collects weekly samples over an entire year. The MiniSipper has primarily been used for metal analysis but this technology should be applicable to other analytes of interest such as organics, pesticides, nutrients, etc. This presentation will: 1) give an overview of the MiniSipper instrumentation; 2) present results from high-resolution acid mine drainage and post-wildfire monitoring; and 3) discuss applications currently under development such as the Event Response MiniSipper and the Disaster Response MiniSipper. Bring your sampling needs, ideas and problems; perhaps the MiniSipper could offer a solution.

Now is the time to register for the Geologic Techniques Courses that are being offered this summer. These one credit courses introduce you to the techniques used by professional geologists. Knowledge and skills provided through these courses will give you hands-on experience and insight that will help you land an internship or employment position in geology. Please see the attached flyer. The first course in Sediment Grain Size Analysis begins this week!

Here are the course descriptions for the first three courses being offered on the Loudoun Campus:

Grain Size Analysis: This course introduces students to sediment analysis. It provides hands-on practical experience on how to process and analyze sediment samples in order to determine depositional environment. Students will learn how to sample, wet sieve, dry sieve, pipette and interpret the data.

Four Week

PREREQUISITE: GOL-105 or an equivalent course is recommended.

Micropaleontology Techniques: Provides hands-on techniques for extracting microfossils from a variety of rock types. Focuses on basic knowledge of microfossil types and their environment of deposition, the correct method needed to obtain sample specimens, and basic data graphing techniques. Prerequisites: It is recommended that the student has completed GOL 106 or an equivalent historical geology course.

Four Week

Prerequisites: It is recommended that students have completed GOL 106 or an equivalent historical geology course

Core Description: This course instructs students in the fundamental techniques involved in rock core and sediment collection and description. The student will learn the basic collection methods for subsurface rock and sediment samples, how to identify pertinent features of the samples for various types of geological investigations, and protocols for storage and management of the samples.

Two Week

It is strongly recommended that students have completed GOL105 or an equivalent physical geology course before enrolling in this class.

Check Loudoun and Annandale Summer course schedules
Each course is worth 1 credit
All require GOL 105 (or equivalent) as prerequisite
Hard Rock Techniques requires GOL 207 (or equivalent) as prerequisite

The Fort Valley Library is pleased to announce our May Lyceum presentation. Our speaker is Callan Bentley, Assistant Professor of Geology at Northern Virginia Community College.

Prof. Bentley’s talk is entitled “Snowball Earth”. During a massive planetary ice age that occurred 700 million years ago, ice stretched from Earth’s poles to the equator and the resulting climate change switched the planet from domination by microbial slime to an oxygenated place with the very first animal fossils. Three sites in Virginia record this extraordinary tropical-latitude glaciation, which was only ended when volcanic activity induced global warming. As Prof. Bentley will explain, it’s a big story, a true scientific controversy, and a compelling brain-stretcher of a tale that will make us think about connections between climate, plate tectonics, weathering of rock, animal evolution, and ocean circulation.

Please join us on Saturday, Mayy 25th, at the Fort Valley Library and Community Center, 6190 Woodstock Tower Road, Fort Valley, VA 22652 (540-933-6714).

(From Rt. 675, take Rt. 678 (Fort Valley Road) north to Detrick. At the Post Office in Detrick, turn left onto Woodstock Tower Rd. The Community Center is 0.5 miles on the left.
From Rt. 55, take Rt. 678 south and turn right onto Woodstock Tower Rd. The Community Center is 0.5 miles on the left.)

The presentation will begin at 10 AM. Refreshments will be available at 9:30 AM and after the presentation.

The public service announcement is attached.
