D.C. Metro Area Solar Homes Tour

The D.C. Sierra Club, along with the Virginia Solar Council and Potomac Region Solar Energy Industry Association volunteers, are hosting their 20th annual D.C. metro area solar homes tour on October 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Over sixty solar-powered homes will highlight a variety of passive design, technology and sustainable living concepts, including photovoltaic and solar hot water systems, radiant heat, energy-efficient appliances, and energy-saving building construction techniques. Many homeowners also will be demonstrating their energy and water conservation measures, recycling and composting procedures, and their fuel-efficient or alternative energy vehicles. The tour guide can be downloaded from the website or purchased for a tax-deductible $5 from participating outlets, including all local REI stores.

Takoma Park Green Homes Tour

As part of the regional Washington DC Solar Homes Tour, the Takoma Park Green Homes includes a handful of homes that encompass an area within a 1 to 2 mile radius. The tour is designed to easily walk or bike. From small-scale energy efficiency retrofits, to green additions and new construction, the focus of the Takoma Park Green Homes tour is to demonstrate changes everyone can make in their homes. A few homes from the Takoma Park tour are also part of the Washington DC Tour of Solar homes. The rest are exclusive to the Takoma Park tour. Western Maryland Tour

The 1st Annual Western Maryland Tour features 24 solar and green homes from Frederick and Washington Counties and West Virginia. The tour includes a variety of renewable energy improved buildings and properties including farms, a solar powered pharmacy, a historic renovation, as well as residential solar homes featuring many energy-efficient improvements. The tour guide has local installers and useful information for those considering a solar installation. Tickets are $2.00 at area locations in Western Maryland.

The Capitol Hill Energy Cooperative Solar Home Tour and Fair

October 16 (Fair 10am – 2pm, Tour noon – 5pm)

The Solar Home Tour and Fair will start at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol Street – just 2 blocks from the US Capitol and Supreme Court. The Fair will include green and renewable energy vendors, activities, a solar car, food, and more. Guide Booklets (your tickets) for the solar home tour will be available at the Fair for $5, or can be purchased in advance at Frager’s Hardware, Hill’s Kitchen, Riverby Books and Coldwell Banker. The Guide will be available at Eastern Market Oct 9-10. The solar and green homes on the tour will feature solar installations and many sustainable improvements.
