Nuts, Bolts and HDD
A Tough Job at a Tough Location
Crossing the Cape Fear

The project involved drilling a 55-inch diameter Horizontal Directional bore 2400 feet across the Cape Fear river in Wilmington North Carolina through the Pee Dee Formation and exiting in soft marsh peat at a tie-in pit seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Subsurface investigation was almost all water borings off a barge in the river and in tidal marsh, (installing piezometers in the river was a challenge to say the least). The Pee Dee is a geologic riot, consisting of 13-blow silty clay to 100-blow weak rock layers. We moved 300,000 gallons of bentonite salt-water contaminated drill mud out of the exit pit in the ecological sensitive area and left only footprints in the marsh behind us. All done in a nine-month span from beginning design to pipeline
energization. This was a fun job to have been on, and even more fun because the contractor listened to the geologist.
