The March meeting of the Potomac Geophysical Society will be held March 17th at the Fort Myer Officers’ Club in Arlington, VA (http://www.fmmcmwr.com/maps.htm) in the Campaign Room. This month’s talk will be: Numerical Weather Prediction – Fundamentals and State of the Art by Dr. Ananthakrishna Sarma, Center for Atmospheric Physics, SAIC, McLean, VA.
Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) refers to the process of determining the future state of the atmosphere using numerical algorithms and computers. Even though significant advances have been made in this field, we cannot categorically say that “we can predict weather accurately”. There are several reasons why weather prediction is inherently difficult. We will examine these reasons. We will also explore SAIC’s Operational Multiscale Environment model with Grid Adaptivity (OMEGA) as an example of a state of the art NWP system.
Dr. Sarma is a Senior Scientist and a Technical Fellow at SAIC. He has an MS in Meteorology from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University. His fundamental expertise is in the modeling of the atmosphere including cloud physics and atmospheric chemistry. He joined SAIC as a Research Scientist in 1986. While at SAIC he has worked on a range of atmospheric modeling problems ranging from routine weather prediction to simulating nuclear fireball clouds.
